How to Type Upside Down on Your Phone and Computer

By Muhammad ZeeshanUpdated 4 min read

To type upside down, paste your words into an upside down text generator, copy the flipped result and paste it anywhere. It works on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac because the flipped letters are ordinary Unicode characters. For printed documents, you can also rotate a text box 180 degrees in Word or Google Docs.

Why you cannot just type upside down

Keyboards only type the letters printed on them. There is no rotate key, and fonts do not have an upside down mode. The trick is that Unicode, the standard behind every character on your screen, includes thousands of letters from phonetic and other alphabets. Many of them happen to look like familiar letters turned over. An a becomes ɐ, an e becomes ǝ and an h becomes ɥ.

A generator swaps each of your letters for its rotated twin and then reverses the order, so the line reads correctly when you turn the screen around.

How to type upside down on iPhone and Android

  1. Open the upside down text generator in your browser.
  2. Type or paste your text into the box.
  3. Tap Copy next to the upside down result.
  4. Open your messaging or social app and paste.

That is it. There is nothing to install, and the text works in iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Discord and most other apps. Tip, save the page to your home screen so it is one tap away next time.

How to type upside down on Windows and Mac

The generator works the same way on a computer. Copy the result and paste it with Ctrl + V on Windows or Command + V on a Mac.

If you need just one special character, such as an upside down question mark or exclamation mark for Spanish, there are built in options.

  • Mac. Press Option + Shift + ? for an upside down question mark and Option + 1 for an upside down exclamation mark.
  • Windows. Hold Alt and type 0191 on the number pad for an upside down question mark, or 0161 for an upside down exclamation mark.

How to flip text upside down in Word

Upside down Unicode letters work in Word, but if you want normal letters rotated for a printed sign or card, rotate a text box instead.

  1. Go to Insert and choose Text Box, then draw a box.
  2. Type your text inside it.
  3. Drag the round rotate handle at the top of the box until it turns 180 degrees, or open the layout options and set the rotation to 180.

The text stays editable, and it prints upside down exactly as shown.

How to flip text upside down in Google Docs

  1. Go to Insert, then Drawing, then New.
  2. Use the text box tool to add your text.
  3. Select the box, then use Actions, Rotate, and choose rotate clockwise twice.
  4. Click Save and close to place it in your document.

Upside down, mirror and backwards text

These three are often confused.

StyleWhat happensReads correctly when
Upside downLetters rotated and order reversedThe screen is turned around
MirrorLetters flipped left to right and order reversedHeld up to a mirror
BackwardsOnly the order is reversedRead from right to left

The upside down text generator gives you all three, plus small caps and more. For a playful tiny style, try tiny superscript letters.

Fun ways to use upside down text

  • Send a message that only makes sense when a friend flips their phone.
  • Add an upside down line to your bio so it stands out while people scroll.
  • Hide a clue in a party game or a scavenger hunt.
  • Post a joke about living down under.

For even stranger text, try zalgo text. Our explainer on where zalgo text came from shows how it works. For styling text in Discord, see how Discord formatting works.

Upside down numbers and punctuation

Numbers and symbols flip too, which helps when you want a whole message upside down.

CharacterUpside down version
1 2 3 4 5ϛ ㄣ Ɛ ᄅ Ɩ
6 7 8 9 00 6 8 ㄥ 9
Full stop and comma' ˙
Question and exclamation marks¡ ¿

The digits 0 and 8 look the same both ways, while 6 and 9 simply swap. Letters with accents are left unchanged, so type without accents for the cleanest result.

Is upside down text safe to use

Yes. Upside down text is made of ordinary Unicode characters, the same kind used to write many languages. It cannot carry code, harm your device or access your accounts. The only caution is with keyboard apps that promise to type upside down, since keyboards can see everything you type. A browser based generator avoids that risk, because it does not need any permissions.

A note on accessibility

Screen readers read upside down characters by their real names, so a flipped sentence can sound like random symbols. Use upside down text for fun and keep important details right side up.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy and paste upside down letters

Yes. Upside down letters are real Unicode characters, so you can copy them from an upside down text generator and paste them into messages, bios, comments and documents.

Is there an upside down keyboard

Some third party keyboard apps type upside down, but they need permission to read what you type. A browser based generator does the same job without installing anything.

How do I flip text upside down in Word

Insert a text box, type your text, then rotate the box 180 degrees with the rotate handle or the rotation setting in the layout options. The text stays editable.

What is the difference between upside down and mirror text

Upside down text is rotated 180 degrees, so it reads correctly when the screen is turned around. Mirror text is flipped left to right, so it reads correctly in a mirror.

Why do some upside down capitals look odd

Unicode does not include a perfect rotated twin for every capital letter, so generators use the closest shape. Lowercase letters have the most complete set and look the most convincing.
