To strikethrough on Discord, type two tildes before and after your text, like ~~this~~, then send the message. It works the same on desktop, web, iPhone and Android. For names, nicknames and other places where markdown does not work, copy crossed out letters from our crossed out text generator instead.
Method one, Discord strikethrough with two tildes
This is the quickest way and it works on every device.
- Type two tildes,
~~. - Type the words you want to cross out, with no space after the tildes.
- Type two more tildes, with no space before them.
- Send the message.
Discord hides the tildes and draws a line through your words. You can cross out part of a sentence too. For example, I am ~~not~~ ready crosses out only the word not.
Method two, the desktop toolbar
On the Discord desktop app and in a web browser, you can strike text without typing any symbols.
- Type your message in the chat box.
- Select the words you want to cross out by dragging over them or double clicking.
- A small toolbar appears above the selection.
- Click the button with a crossed out S.
The toolbar adds the tildes for you, so the result is the same as method one.
Method three, on iPhone and Android
The Discord mobile apps do not show a formatting toolbar, so use tildes.
- iPhone. Tap the number key, then the symbols key. The tilde is in the second row.
- Android. Tap the symbols key. On most keyboards the tilde is on the second symbols page. Long pressing some keys also shows it.
Type two tildes, your text, then two more tildes, and send.
Method four, Unicode strikethrough for names
Markdown works in messages and in your About Me, so two tildes strike text there too. It does not work in your display name, server nickname, channel names or server name. In those places Discord shows the tildes as plain symbols.
To cross out text in a name, use Unicode strikethrough. Each letter is followed by a special line character, so the line is part of the text itself.
- Open the strikethrough text generator.
- Type your name or text.
- Tap Copy.
- In Discord, open User Settings, then Profiles, and paste into Display Name. For a server nickname, right click your avatar in that server, or tap the server name on a phone, and choose the option to edit your per server profile.
Keep the 32 character limit in mind. Each line character counts, so crossed out text uses about twice as many characters as plain text. The generator shows a counter so you can check. For other name styles, such as gothic, cursive and small caps, try our Discord font styles.
Combining strikethrough with other styles
Discord lets you stack styles by nesting the symbols.
| Result | What to type |
|---|---|
| Bold and crossed out | ~~**text**~~ |
| Italic and crossed out | ~~*text*~~ |
| Underlined and crossed out | ~~__text__~~ |
| Crossed out spoiler | ||~~text~~|| |
Our full Discord formatting guide lists every other symbol, including headers, quotes and code blocks.
Troubleshooting
The tildes show up instead of a line. There is probably a space between a tilde and a word. Delete it and try again.
Only one tilde on each side. Discord needs two. One tilde does nothing.
It works in messages but not my name. That is expected. Use Unicode strikethrough for names.
I want to show tildes without striking. Put a backslash in front of each tilde, or wrap the text in backticks.
Strikethrough compared with spoilers
Both strikethrough and spoilers hide or change the meaning of text, but they work differently. Strikethrough leaves the words visible with a line through them, which is good for jokes, corrections and finished tasks. A spoiler, made with two vertical bars on each side, hides the words behind a dark bar until someone taps it, which is better for plot details, answers to puzzles and surprises. You can even combine them to make a crossed out spoiler.
Strikethrough in threads, forums and announcements
Markdown works the same in threads, forum posts and announcement channels as in normal messages, so two tildes work everywhere you can post. Bot embeds also support it, so server owners can strike text in automated messages. In announcement channels, a crossed out line followed by an update is a clear way to show a changed time or a cancelled event without deleting the original information.
Quick answers
Does strikethrough notify anyone. No. Formatting does not change who is notified. Mentions inside crossed out text still notify the person mentioned.
Can I edit a message to add strikethrough. Yes. Edit the message, add two tildes on each side of the words and save. Discord shows the message as edited.
When to use strikethrough
Crossed out text is great for jokes, playful corrections and showing changes. For example, cross out the word you nearly said and add the polite one after it. It is also useful for marking finished tasks in a planning channel. If you need to cross out text outside Discord, such as in Word, Google Docs or on your iPhone, see our guide on how to cross out text.
