How the age guesser works
The age guesser looks at the face in your photo and estimates how old that person appears to be. It does not know your birthday and it does not recognize who you are. It reads the same visual clues that people use when they guess an age, such as skin texture, the shape of the face, the eyes and the hairline.
Here is what happens when you add a photo.
- Your browser prepares the photo. It turns the photo the right way up and removes hidden details stored in the file, such as the place where the photo was taken. Very large photos are made a little smaller so they upload quickly. Nothing is cropped.
- The photo is checked. It travels over a secure connection to our age check, where an AI model looks at every clear face and returns an age for each one. If the first check fails, a backup model tries once more.
- You get your result. You see your estimated age in large type, plus a likely range. The range shows how sure the guess is. In our tests, guesses with a narrow range were closer to the real age than guesses with a wide one.
- The photo is deleted. It is kept only while your guess is made. We do not save it to a disk or write it to a log, and it is never used to train a model.
How to get the most accurate result
The age guesser can only work with what the camera captured. A good photo gives a fairer guess. These tips make the biggest difference.
- Face the light. Stand facing a window in daylight. Soft light from the front shows your skin as it really is. Light from straight above casts shadows under the eyes.
- Hold the camera at eye level. A camera below your chin makes the jaw and neck look heavier. A camera far above changes the shape of the face.
- Step back a little. Front cameras use a wide lens. Held very close, they stretch the nose and forehead. Hold the phone at arm length, or use the back camera with a timer.
- Skip the filter. Beauty filters smooth skin and reshape faces, so the guess reads the filter as much as your face.
- Keep a relaxed face. A soft smile is fine. A big laugh creates lines, and a frown deepens them.
- Show your whole face. Sunglasses, a hat brim or hair over the eyes hide clues the guesser needs.
Understanding your result
Your result has three parts.
- The age is the single most likely age for the face in your photo.
- The range gives the ages the guess is fairly sure about. In our test with known ages, the real age fell inside the range 70 percent of the time.
- Your real age, if you add it, lets the page tell you whether you look younger or older than you are. That number is only used on your screen. It is never sent to us.
If your photo has several people, each face gets its own age and a short note on where it is in the picture. The most prominent face is shown first.
Remember that looking older or younger in one photo says very little about you. It is a snapshot of light, angle and expression on one day. Try two or three photos in different light, and you will see how much those things matter.
Why AI age guesses vary
The same photo always gets the same guess from our age guesser. A different photo of the same person can get a different guess, for the same reasons people guess ages differently. In our own test, small edits such as making a photo darker, black and white or slightly blurred changed 40 to 55 percent of the guesses, usually by about 3 years.
- Lighting. Hard light shows every line and shadow. Soft light hides them.
- Expression. Smiling lifts the cheeks but also adds lines around the eyes, so the same face can be guessed older or younger depending on the expression.
- Makeup and grooming. Foundation evens out skin tone. A fresh shave or a full beard can shift a guess by several years.
- The camera lens. Wide lenses up close change the proportions of the face, which can change how old it looks.
- Image quality. Blurry, dark or heavily compressed photos hide skin detail, so the guesser has less to go on.
What affects how old you look
How old a face looks depends on more than the number of birthdays. Researchers who study perceived age point to a few clear factors.
- Sun exposure is one of the biggest outside factors. Years of strong sun change skin texture and tone.
- Sleep and rest change the area under the eyes and the brightness of the skin from day to day.
- Smoking is linked with earlier lines around the mouth and eyes.
- Hair color and hairline are strong clues. Grey hair and a higher hairline push a guess up.
- Face shape changes slowly with age as the cheeks lose fullness and the jaw line softens.
None of these are good or bad. They are simply the clues people and AI models use when they guess an age.
Accuracy and limits
We test the age guesser in two ways, and we ran both in October 2026.
Exact ages. We used 156 public photos of people aged 15 to 74 whose birth date and the date the photo was taken are both on record, with equal numbers of women and men in each ten year age band.
- The average guess was 5 years off. Our best estimate of the true average is between 4.2 and 5.9 years.
- Half of the guesses were within 3 years of the real age.
- 72 percent were within 5 years, and 90 percent were within 10 years.
- The range shown with each guess included the real age 70 percent of the time.
The age guesser is most accurate for people under 45, about 3 to 4 years off on average. It is least accurate for people aged 65 to 74, about 8 years off. It guessed women about 3 years younger than they were on average, and men about 1 year older.
Fairness across groups. We also used 196 photos from a public research set with equal numbers of people from seven broad groups of skin tones and backgrounds. Those photos are labelled with ten year age groups rather than exact ages. The gap in accuracy between the best and worst served group was under two years.
We will run these tests again whenever the model or the method changes, and update this page.
Some limits to keep in mind.
- It estimates how old a face looks, not how old someone is.
- It cannot verify age and must never be used for age checks of any kind.
- Children under 13 should not use the tool, and you should only upload photos of yourself or of people who agreed to it.

Privacy
Your photo is used for one thing only, your age guess. It is sent over a secure connection, used to make the guess, then deleted. We do not save it and we do not log it. The service that checks it works under a zero data retention promise, so it does not keep the photo or use it for training.
Your browser also removes location details from the photo before it is sent. The optional real age you type never leaves the page. The share card is made on your device, and your photo appears on it only if you tick the box.
