A negative canthal tilt means the outer corner of your eye sits a little lower than the inner corner, so a line between them slopes down toward the temple. Makeup artists call these downturned eyes. It is a normal eye shape. You can measure your own tilt in degrees with our free golden ratio face test.
What negative canthal tilt looks like
Picture a line from the inner corner of your eye, by your nose, to the outer corner, toward your temple. In most eyes that line rises slightly. With a negative tilt it slopes down instead.
Downturned eyes often come with a few other traits, though not always.
- The outer third of the upper lid may fold down slightly.
- A little white may show below the iris toward the outer corner.
- The eyes often read as soft, gentle or thoughtful.
Our main guide to canthal tilt explains positive, neutral and negative tilt side by side, with a measuring tool.
How common is a negative canthal tilt
Less common than a positive tilt. In our own measurements of 201 straight on faces from public photo sets, the average tilt was about 3 degrees upward, and fewer than 1 in 10 faces had a downward tilt. That makes a negative tilt a normal variation, like being left handed, rather than anything unusual.
How to tell if your canthal tilt is negative
Photos can mislead, so take care with the setup.
- Use a straight on photo at eye level, with your head level and a relaxed face.
- Check that your pupils sit on a horizontal line. If they do not, your head is tilted and the reading will be off.
- Compare the height of your inner and outer corners on each eye.
The easiest way is our golden ratio face test. It corrects for head tilt automatically and shows the angle of each eye. A reading of a degree or two either side of zero is effectively neutral.
What causes a negative canthal tilt
- Genes and bone structure. The position of the tissue that anchors the outer corner, and the shape of the eye socket, are set mostly by genes. Downturned eyes often run in families.
- Age. The anchoring tissue and the skin around the eyes loosen over the years, so the outer corners can sit a little lower and a positive tilt can move toward neutral or negative.
- Expression and swelling. Tiredness and puffiness can make the outer corners look heavier for a while.
A note on health. A tilt that has always been there is just your eye shape. If one eye starts to look different from the other, the lower lid pulls away from the eye, or the change is sudden, show it to an eye doctor.
Is a negative canthal tilt bad
No. The online habit of ranking eye shapes treats a strong upward tilt as ideal and a downward tilt as something to worry about. That ranking is opinion. Research on facial attractiveness points to symmetry and closeness to the average face, and plenty of widely admired faces have downturned eyes. Soft, slightly downturned eyes are often described as warm, kind and approachable.
Our guide to prey eyes looks at where these rankings come from and why they miss the point.
Makeup for downturned eyes
You do not need to change anything. If you would like a lifted look for a day, these steps help.
- Brows. Brush the tails up and fill them so they end level or slightly higher than the start of the brow.
- Shadow. Keep the darker shade on the outer upper lid, blended up toward the tail of the brow, and keep the lower lash line light.
- Liner. Start the line thin at the inner corner and thicken it toward the outer corner. Begin the wing slightly above the natural outer corner and angle it upward.
- Lower lid. Line only the outer third of the lower lash line, or skip it, so the eye does not look pulled down.
- Lashes. Curl the outer lashes and focus mascara there.
For the full lifted version, our guide to positive canthal tilt shows how makeup follows an upturned eye.
Negative tilt, hooded lids and droopy lids
These three often get mixed up, but they describe different things.
| Term | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Negative canthal tilt | The outer corner sits lower than the inner corner |
| Hooded eyes | A fold of skin from the brow covers part of the upper lid |
| Droopy upper lid | The edge of the upper lid sits low over the iris |
You can have one without the others. Many downturned eyes have no hooding at all, and many hooded eyes tilt upward. A droopy upper lid that is new, or that affects only one eye, is worth showing to a doctor.
Can each eye tilt differently
Yes. It is common for one eye to tilt a degree or two more than the other, and in a photo one eye can read slightly downturned while the other reads level. Head tilt makes this look bigger. Measure from a level, straight on photo before deciding you have a negative tilt.
Glasses for downturned eyes
Frames with a slight upward sweep at the outer edge, such as soft cat eye or browline frames, echo a lift. Frames with a strong, straight top line also work, because they draw the eye across rather than down. Very round, low frames can make the outer corners look heavier, which is worth knowing but not a rule.
Why downturned eyes read as kind
Faces tend to look gentler when the outer corners of the eyes and the mouth curve slightly down and in, a little like a soft, sympathetic expression. That is why downturned eyes are so often described as warm, thoughtful and approachable in portraits and film.
Negative canthal tilt in photos
- Hold the camera at eye level or slightly above. A camera below the face makes the corners look lower.
- Keep your chin level rather than tucked.
- Soft light from the front fills shadow under the outer corners.
Our tools never call any tilt good or bad. They show your angle and the range we see in real faces, with a reminder that geometry says nothing about your worth.
